My daughter, who’s sixteen years old, stayed home on her own for three nights for the first time in her life. Tara and I had a weekend away while our son was away at a seminar with his friends.
I trust my daughter! To me she seems smart, bright, responsible, caring, understanding, engaging, reasonable, resilient, and the list goes on.
Well… she threw a party!
Have you ever been to a white lies party? It’s when you wear a white shirt that has a white lie written on it.
Now, she didn’t tell us that she was going to have a party, although Tara and I had a feeling that it might happen. We spoke with her on Saturday night, she was at work, and didn’t mention a thing.
We live in a small town and on our way home we ran into a few folks who asked how our white lies party went on Friday night.…
“What white lies party?” we said.
When we got home, I went straight upstairs and put on the shirt in the picture. When our daughter saw it she broke out in hysterics.
In the house I grew up in, even though my parents were wonderful people, I would have gotten in such trouble for hosting a party without permission.
But that’s not going to happen in our family anymore. We’ve evolved.
Molly had a great time at a great party and cleaned our house better than she ever had before.
Win-win, right?
No anger was necessary.
On the anniversary of my father’s passing, I would like to thank him for giving me the skills to be an even more accepting father than he was able to be….
How have you evolved?
